Implementation of United Nations Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020 in Indonesia

The earth's biological resources are very important for economic and social development. As a result of this is the growing recognition that biological diversity form the earth's biological resources is a global asset of tremendous value to present and future generations. At the same time, threat to species and ecosystems, due to human activities, continues to increase over time, and continues until it reaches the level of extinction.

In response, to the extinction of biodiversity will continue, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), an authoritative advocate for the global environment in the system of the United Nations (UN), held Ad Hoc Working Group of Experts on Biological Diversity in November 1988 to explore the need for an international convention on biodiversity. Soon after, in May 1989, UNEP established the Ad Hoc Working Group of Technical and Legal Experts to prepare an international legal instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Experts take into account "the need to share costs and benefits between developed countries and developing countries", as well as "ways and means to support innovation by local people", to form a body called "The Convention on Biological Diversity".

The Convention on Biological Diversity is a convention that handles all aspects of biodiversity in the form of genetic resources, species and ecosystems. The convention was inspired by commitment in the midst of the world community towards sustainable development. This convention is a step forward in the conservation of biodiversity, sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.

One of the programs launched by the convention is the "United Nations Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020". This program is a program of the United Nations which the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) took a major role in the passage of the program.United Nations Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020 was launched at a conference of UNCBD in Japan in 2010, the conference sets 20 targets of the program, named "The Aichi Biodiversity Targets", to support the achievement of these targets, various kinds of "Strategic Plan”.

There are five strategic goals and 20 ambitious yetachievable targets. Collectively known as the Aichi Targets, they are part the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity.

Goal A: Address the underlying causes of biodiversity loss by mainstreaming biodiversity across government and society

Goal B: Reduce the direct pressures on biodiversity and promote sustainable use

Goal C: Improve the status of biodiversity by safeguarding ecosystems, species and genetic diversity

Goal D: Enhance the benefits to all from biodiversity and ecosystem services

Goal E: Enhance implementation through participatory planning, knowledge management and capacity building

Indonesia has forests as the lungs of the world with the third largest forest area in the world with various kinds of wealth and biodiversity. 15.3% consists of the world's biodiversity. People awareness is needed to enhancethe values of biodiversity and the steps that can be taken to conserve and sustainably use of forest resources. For example by making a list that contains information about the biodiversity that we have.

Several steps that can be taken to preserve the wealth of biodiversity by youth are:

  • Create a small group to discuss current issues regarding biodiversity. so comprehension about biodiversity increases, so that can build awareness of the existence of the diversity of forest resources in Indonesia.

  • Discussion routine about cases, the problems, the results of research, and a source of knowledge about biodiversity needs to be studied intensively. This discussion’sobjective is to increase the movementby youth in action to conserve biological diversity.

  • Youth should be responsive and up todate. They have to know, what is happening around them and should be criticized to solve the issue.

  • Researches not only examine the sources that have been there, youth also must do some researches so that the wealth of knowledge increased. Considering the rich biodiversity of Indonesia is very abundant.

From the measures undertaken over the youth is expected to biodiversity can be maintained well conserved and can be used wisely by all peoples.
